Willie Thomas is an innovative art educator, community organizer, and program leader with over 4,400 industry and instructional hours dedicated to designing and implementing transformative educational, cultural, and public art programs throughout Southern California. His professional practice focuses on building deep, sustainable connections with Black, Brown, and low-income communities through culturally responsive workshops, arts activism, and site-specific public space curation. By translating complex studio methodologies into accessible, low-stress community frameworks, Thomas's programs consistently drive organizational growth, empower young creators, and foster an authentic, lifelong love for the creative process.

Institutional Teaching Partnerships

Facilitating high-impact public programming as a Consultant and Contracting Artist for premier cultural institutions, including The J. Paul Getty Trust and LA Commons. He has successfully developed and executed major public workshops, such as the Superpower Portraits collage series at the Getty Center, the June Jubilee: Afrofuturist Ancestor Masks at the Los Angeles Public Library’s Octavia Lab, LA Soundscapes family programming, and the Caña Brava workshop series at the Ford Theater.

Afterschool Educational Leadership

Serving for over four years as the Lead Art Program Leader for Action Youth America at Prairie Vista Middle School in Hawthorne. In this role, he manages site-based instructional execution, designs multi-year curricula, and directs spatial showcase curations over full academic calendars within the school district’s afterschool ecosystem.

Public Space Curation & Civic Activations

Directing large-scale community art experiences, live-painting features, and cultural marketplaces at regional hubs. This includes leading public art activations at the Willowbrook Community Garden, the Natural History Museum’s Cultural Treasures Market, and creating major interactive activations for LA Metro, LA Commons, and FIFA at the Crenshaw Metro Station for the 2026 World Cup.

Through his ongoing work in the classroom, the neighborhood, and his professional training at UCLA Extension, Thomas continues to collaborate with cross-functional teams to build spaces where young artists can dismantle imposter syndrome and assert their creative voices with confidence.
